Similarities in Platos Allegory of the Cave and A Tale of...
The rigorous and troublesome times of the eighteenth century brought forth much darkness and suffering, but from this oppression came contentment and light. From the opening paragraph, light and dark are contrasted in A Tale of Two Cities, with the use of direct opposites to portray the times. The Allegory of the Cave by Plato also goes along with this theme. It is a symbolic depiction of prisoners held in a cave without a true perception of reality. They are brought up looking at only the shadows of what really exists until finally one is released and travels out of the cave into the radiant world above. The theme of light vs. dark is portrayed as metaphors, as the characters Sydney Carton, and the prisoner in Platoââ¬â¢s Allegory, as wellâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Once he is shown the truth however, and he looks back upon the cave, he sees what a dark unrealistic place it is and will do anything to stay in the light. Comparable to this is the metaphor at the very beginning of A Tale of Two Cities. ââ¬Å"It was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness.â⬠(P.1) Sydney Cartonââ¬â¢s character represents the theme of light vs. dark because of his transformation throughout the novel. He initially appears as a lazy alcoholic who cares for no man on earth. As the tale continues, Cartonââ¬â¢s love for Lucie brings him out of the darkness and changes him into a better, more respectable man. His alcoholism begins to end and ââ¬Å"For the first time in many years, he had no strong drinkâ⬠¦and last night he had dropped the brandy slowly down on Mr. Lorryââ¬â¢s hearth like a man who had done with it.â⬠(P. 316 Bantam) Cartonââ¬â¢s ability to do this marks a key turning point because he used to drink to escape his troubles. Now he is giving it up so he can be closer to the man he would have been, had he not thrown his life away. Parallel to Cartonââ¬â¢s change is Platoââ¬â¢s Allegory. The prisoners are chained since childhood and that they cannot move and can only see the wall of the cave in front of them. The shadows they s ee are reality to them so when one leaves the cave. He sees everything in a whole new light. ââ¬Å"He will require to grow accustomed to the sight of the upper world. And

Globalization Is Not Being Exploited By Capitalists Essay
At one time, Joan Robinson, a British economist had said, ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢There is only one thing that is worse than being exploited by capitalists. And that is not being exploited by capitalistsââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Nayyar 2006, 4). The process of globalization has changed the ways of human interaction and the flow of goods and services, people, information and ideas creating an interconnected single community that is continuously uniting many nations across borders. The emergence of easier accessibility to consumersââ¬â¢ needs has skyrocketed the production and consumption of goods and services. With a greater demand comes greater production and the twenty-first century capitalist economies have changed patterns of free trade, rely on commodities and resources to be able to make profit and be integrated into the open-market, benefitting from further economic growth. This change in trade patterns amongst different markets are based on product specialization and the division of labour t o create employment opportunities, income and surplus benefits are extended to other parts of the globe. These patterns of trade encourage greater competition between markets and low cost goods and services for consumers (Ebeling 2004, 3). However, the process of globalization has created two different worlds of a winner and a loser; the included and the excluded. How To Work with Glass Tubing in the Lab
Glass tubing is used to connect other pieces of lab equipment. It can be cut, bent and stretched for a variety of uses. Here is how to work glass tubing safely for a chemistry lab or other scientific laboratory. Types of Glass Tubing There are two main types of glass that are commonly found in glass tubing using in labs: flint glass and borosilicate glass. Flint glass gets its name from the flint nodules found in English chalk deposits that were a source of high purity silica, which was used to produce a potash lead glass. Originally, flint glass was a leaded glass, containing anywhere from 4ââ¬â60% lead oxide. Modern flint glass tends to contain a much lower percentage of lead. This is the most common type of glass worked in labs because it softens at low temperatures, such as those produced by an alcohol lamp or burner flame. It is easy to manipulate and inexpensive. Borosilicate glass is a high-temperature glass made from a mixture of silica and boron oxide. Pyrex is a well-known example of borosilicate glass. This type of glass cant be worked with an alcohol flame; a gas flame or other hot flame is needed. Borosilicate glass costs more and typically isnt worth the extra effort for a home chemistry lab, but it is common in school and commercial labs because of its chemical inertness and resistance to thermal shock. Borosilicate glass has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion. Selecting Glass To Use There are other considerations besides the chemical composition of the glass tubing. You can buy tubing in various length, wall thickness, inside diameter and outside diameter. Usually, the outside diameter is the critical factor because it determines whether or not the glass tubing will fit in a stopper or other connector for your setup. The most common outside diameter (OD) is 5 mm, but its a good idea to check your stoppers before buying, cutting or bending glass.

The Subculture Of Urban Space - 1566 Words
The subculture of lowriding has been a way for Mexican Americans to express themselves through their ââ¬Å"tricked outâ⬠vehicles. It was, as journalist Ted West wrote, a way to ââ¬Å"express the refusal of a young Chicano American to be Anglicized. There has never been a clearer case of the automobile being used as an ethnic statement.â⬠Although there are preconceived notions of negativity such as gang involvement with lowriding, that notion is false, and shows how the lowrider community is misunderstood. However, lowriding isnââ¬â¢t as prevalent in America as it was back in the 70ââ¬â¢s. Regardless itââ¬â¢s still thriving in the United States among other ethnicities and internationally for similar reasons it became huge in the U.S. The construction and presentation of lowriders are an outlet for artistic expression to redefine and challenge the assimilation of urban space. Essay on Horror Movies An Art Form - 463 Words
Ever since the advent of celluloid films, horror movies have always held a fascination for viewers. Just why do people pay good money to be scared out of their wits? Apart from its entertainment value, the horror movie satisfies certain primordial needs in man. Through the horror movies, one is able to come to grips with ones personal demons, fear of death and other irrational phobias and in the process achieve a catharsis. Far from being morbid, such movies actually affirm life for the movie-goer, for he is able to emerge from the dark into the light, both literally and figuratively, having explored the world beyond our normal perception as well as the deep recesses of the human soul and say, Its good to be alive. Horrorâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦And that is the greatest fear of all. In the horror movie, however, death is not the be all and end all; it could be the start of a diabolical way of `life, as a vampire, zombie or a resurrected creature as in the case of Frankensteins creation. Such creatures are a travesty of life and their very presence serves to reaffirm our humanity and provide us with a catharsis for our fear of death, for there are worse things, after all. At the most basis level, horror movies are about the age-old fight between good and evil. At a deeper level, however, the beast within us is the evil that we have to conquer. This is exemplified in such movies of spiritual possession as The Exorcist and The Omen. A variation of the possession myth is the myth of transfiguration or metamorphosis. Dracula transfigure his victim with a bite; the full moon transforms a mere mortal into a lethal lycanthrope; a potion facilitates Dr Jekylls metamorphosis into the evil Mr Hyde. These monsters are a symbol of the duality of human and reflect mans constant struggle within himself. The horror movies of the past ten years of so have tended to be more violently graphic and visceral - a reflection of modern times, perhaps. OPEC Current Trend as an International Oil Producer Cartel
Question: Critically discuss different policy measures that non OPEC member States can take to mitigate the impact of OPECs current trend as an international oil producer cartel. Answer: Introduction Petroleum is the most essential element for every country throughout the world but it cannot be produced in a factory as it is a natural thing. In world market petroleum plays the most important role in respect of the economic stability. Twelve countries along together has formed an organization in relation to control the conducts of import and export of petroleum. This organization is known as Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries in abbreviation it is famous in the name of OPEC. In the world economy OPEC performs a major role in relation to the exporting of petroleum throughout the world. But apart from these twelve countries there are a lot of country in this world who are also seeking petroleum and they are financially also much stronger in comparison to the OPEC countries like USA, Soviet Union, UK and many others. Some of the members of OPEC are UAE, Venezuela, Iran, Iraq and some other countries as well (Chapman and Hodges, 2011). Here in this context various aspec ts relating to the conducts and strategies of the countries who are not the members of the OPEC are going to be discussed along with relevant statistics and formations adapted by non OPEC member countries. OPEC countries manipulate the price level of petroleum in the international market in a normative manner (Rugman and Hodgetts, 2003). Sometime it becomes very difficult for the non OPEC countries to regulate their conducts in the international market in relation to petroleum related issues. The strategies that may be adapted by the non OPEC countries in relation to petroleum related issues are going to be discussed under the following: Nationalization (Strategy 1): By way nationalization of oil producing organizations and corporations impact of privatization in the market of crude oil can be diminished that will not only refer more revenue to the government sectors but also promotes a balance in the international crude oil market. This procedure must not be confused with the restrictions upon the exportation of crude oil. It has represented one of the most important turning points in relation to the development of policies relating to oil trade in the international market. Privatized business conducts are eliminated by the nationalization, as resources of oil in the oil producing nations are controlled by the private international corporations. It permits oil producing nations to obtain control over private properties, though it may violate some of the existing legal contracts. If these nations become the only proprietors of this confiscated resources by violating the law of contract, they will be in a superior position to manipulate the price of the crude oil in the international market, and they will decide the way by which the actual current value of their known stock of petroleum under the ground can be maximized. A number of major implications may be observed as the consequence of nationalization of crude oil. On the other hand, nationalized oil corporations are in some occasion torn among the expectations of the nation that they ought to carry the national flag and their personal goals in relation to success in trade; it could signify a level of emancipation relating to the confines of the national agenda(Rugman and Brewer, 2001). Considering historical background (strategy 2): In the year of 1949Iran and Venezuelawere the foremost nations to be in motion towards the formation of OPEC by making an approach Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq, signifying that they swap over visions and investigate boulevards for usual and quicker communication between oil manufacturing countries (Rittberger, Zangl and Kruck, 2012). In the year of 1959, the IOCs (International Oil Companies) abridged the prescribed value for Venezuelan rudimentary at 5, thereafter 25 for each barrel. And the same for Mid-East crude at a rate of 18 for each barrel (Energy indicators, 2008). In Cairo, Egypt, the foremost Arab Petroleum Congress assembled. There they recognized an Oil Consultation Commission in relation to that IOCs ought to present value alteration tactics to establishment of manufacturing nations (Kazim, 2007). In the year of 1959, Abdullah Tariki to Juan Pablo Perez Alfonzo has been introduced by a reporter Wanda Jablonski in Cairo, at the Arab Oil Congress. They were both exasperated by the slash in prescribed values by IOCs as well as International Oil Corporations. Maadi Pact or Gentlemen's Agreement was the consequence of this meeting (Ricks, 2000). In the year of 1960, reporterWanda Jablonskiaccounted a noticeable antagonism in the direction of the West and a rising disagreement in opposition to malingerer landlordism in the central of Eastern region. In his prominent book permittedThe Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money, and Power In this book it is described by Daniel Yergin that the process by which theregular Oil, which proscribed 75 per cent of the petroleum industry of United State. In the month of August of 1960 with no straight caution to petroleum exporting countries, declared slash of up to 7% of the prescribed values of Mid-East rudimentary oils. Most of the oil producing corporations uniformly abridged the prescribed value for Mid of Eastern region crudes. Mid-East nations previously sensed bitterness towards the Western region above the malingerer landlord customs ofMultinational Oil Corporations that at the time forbidden all oil related procedures inside the congregation nations (Noreng, 2002). In the period of 10th to 14th September of 1960, the Baghdad convention was apprehended by the inventiveness of Juan Pablo Prez Alfonso the Hydrocarbons ministerand Abdullah al-Tariki the Venezuelan Minesand the Saudi Arabian Energy and Mines minister. The administration bodies of Venezuela, Kuwait, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Iran, met inBaghdadwith an object to talk about the ways to amplify the value of the rudimentary petroleum created by their particular nations and act in response to independent proceedings by theMultinational Oil Corporations, they at that period of time proscribed all oil related actions inside the hosting nations. "Collectively along with the Arab and non-Arab manufacturers, the Organization of Petroleum Export Countries (OPEC) has been formed by Saudi Arabia for the purpose of securing the unsurpassed available value from the most important oil companies. From this period of time OPEC countries always tried to control the international crude oil market and they wanted to establish supervision upon the transactions of developed countries in relation to oil import and export (Middle East Oil Trade, 2010 and 2011, 2012). Considering political issues (Strategy 3): In accordance with the confer with compact PFC Energy, only 7 per cent of the anticipated oil and gas reserves throughout the world are in nations that permit private global corporations gratis rein. Entirely 65 per cent are under the control of nationalized corporations for instance Saudi Aramco, along with the other concerning nations like Venezuela and Russia, where admittance by the Western corporations are not easy. The PFC study entails unfavorable political collection to capitalism in several nations is inclined to perimeter upon oil manufacture enlarged in Iran Mexico, Kuwait, Iraq, Russia and Venezuela. Saudi Arabia is also preventive capability extension, but for the reason that of a self imposed limit, nothing like the other nations (Kirton, 2009). As per the publication made by theNew York Times, the oil bradawl thump in the United States has been augmented petroleum manufacture by more than 70 % from the year of 2008 and has abridged the United States petroleum importation from OPEC countries by 55% (Energy indicators, 2008). Increasing production capacity (Strategy 4): From the year of 2011 the United States of America has engrossed the speedily augmented home manufacture of light, sweet, tight oil by way of plummeting same kind of or parallel status, brings in crude petroleummainly from Nigerian and some other suppliers of African territory.Since 2011 to the year of 2013, 50 per cent of petroleum importation diminution collision light crude. Just about 96 % of the two million barrels every day, which is around 290,000m3/d of its expansion, arrives from sweet crude from stiff source development. As home manufacture prolongs to amplify, the United State is in front of upcoming confronts of fascinating the sweet stiff oil (International Crude Oil Trade, Year 2013, 2014). In the year 2011 the United States brought in 1.7 million barrels every day which is around 270,000m3/d. In the year 2013 crude petroleum importation were abridged to one million barrels every day which is around 160,000m3/d.In the early months of 2014, light rudimentary importations to the average of United States was only 0.6 million barrels every day which is around 95,000m3/d (International Crude Oil Trade, Year 2011, 2012). In the month of July of 2014 the non-OPEC manufacture was envisaged at 1.7 million barrels every day that is approximately 270,000m3/d along with the Canada and United States manufacturing 1.6 million barrels every day that is around 250,000m3/d in 2014 . In the month of June 2014 petroleum prices unexpectedly go down by around a third as United State, oil manufacture greater than before and the demand of China and Europe for petroleum reduced. Just previous to the United States quickly reversed out of the rudimentary oil importation marketplace for the reason that of thriving nationwide creation, the smudge value ofNorth Sea Brentcrude petroleum fatigued as on 17th June of 2014 at supplementary than US$115 for each barrel. Obtaining good quality oil from other resources (Strategy 5): Nigeria is the biggest manufacturer ofsweet petroleumin OPEC. On July 2014, as the United States clogged bring in sweet crude oil, additional crude petroleum has become obtainable to processing plant in China, South Korea, Japan and India. They together bought at around 42 per cent extra Nigerian crude oil in the year 2014 in comparison with 2013. Opening in June of 2014 Saudi Aramco national oil and gas company of Saudi Arabia and the biggest oil producing corporation of the world in expressions of production, reduced the value of its rudimentary oil to refineries of Asia to contend with petroleum from African and other Nigerian suppliers. In announcement as on 27th of November in the year 2014, in the OPEC seminar in Vienna, it was declared that the'OECD-Americas' has been the most important non OPEC petroleum supply provider to an predictable contribute enlargement of 1.4 million barrels every day that is 220,000m3/d, to an average of 57.3 million barrels every day that is 9,110,000m3/d, throughout the year of 2015. Since the year of 2011 until middle June of 2014 the yearly standard value of petroleum was about US$110 each barrel. From the month of June of 2014, nevertheless, the cost of oil slips at $US80. OPEC disagreed that this plummet in the cost of petroleum was not absolutely "accredited to oil marketplace rudiments." at the same time as oil marketplace rudiments, "sufficient supply, reasonable demand, a powerful US dollar and doubts concerning worldwide financial expansion" donated to the fall of value, "tentative movement within the oil marketplace has too been a significant aspect." Attempts towards price control (Strategy 6): Notwithstanding as to the worldwide inundate, as on 27th November of 2014 in Vienna, Oil Minister of Saudi, Ali al-Naimi, barren the application from the shoddier OPEC associate countries, such as Algeria Venezuela, and Iran, for manufacture slash. Standard crude, Brent petroleum pitched to US$71.25, a four year short. Al-Naimi said that the marketplace would be absent to accurate itself. "Ancient strategy of defensive price." has been adapted by OPEC. In according with a number of analysts, OPEC might allow value of Brent petroleum drop to US$60 to sluggish downward US shale petroleum manufacture.Regardless of a concerned financial system in associate nations, al-Naimi has repeated his declaration on Saudi functioning. On November of 2014, with creation at 30.56 million barrels every day that is around 4,859,000m3/d, OPEC go into its sixth month of over and above their combined target of manufacture. On 11th December of 2014 the value of OPEC orientation container of Crudes has been drop to US$60.50and by 13th December of the same year, the value of Brentpetroleumfallen to US$61.85. The 12th January of 2015, value of OPEC orientation container of Crudes has been reduced to US$43.55. On the month of February of 2015, OPEC had come in its ninth successive month of over and above their combined target of manufacture. Conclusion: After the above discussion it can be said that OPEC countries are at the controlling position in the world market in relation to the pricing of petroleum as well as the exportation of crude oil. Though the other countries gave an important contribution to produce oil and also to make refinery plants but these were not so successful as to the mark of OPEC member countries (Citino, 2002). Developed countries like America has given huge effort to the improvement of oil production sector but it was not so appreciable like the associate countries of OPEC. OPEC countries are blessed by nature and that is the main reason of the autonomy in the international crude oil market, but in some stage OPEC is obtaining undue advantages (Buckley, 2009). Enduring Love free essay sample
This freak-like accident has a certain impact on the story itself, where Jed notices Joe and starts to grow a sort of infatuation towards him. In The English Review, for instance, Jill Swale mentions ââ¬Å" After the event, Jed Parry tries to make sense of it by arguing that it was Gods way of bringing him and Joe together so that he could convert Joeâ⬠(15. 3). McEwan uses this sort of obsession occurring as a form of religion to connect the soon to be make believe relationship in Jedââ¬â¢s head. As in the story Joe says to Jed ââ¬Å" ââ¬ËYouââ¬â¢ll come. ââ¬â¢ I meant it as a suggestion, but it came out as a request, something I needed from him. He looked at me, unable to speak. Everything, every gesture, every word I spoke was being stored away, gathered and piled, fuel for the long winter of his obsessionâ⬠(McEwan 3025). Joe then finds out that de Clerambaultââ¬â¢s syndrome features a belief that the object of obsession has initiated a love affair and is cruelly toying with the subject by sending secret signals of encouragement while denying the shared passion. This is liberates us somewhat as we where getting used to Jed being the victim, but with this chapter it turns the tables and has Parry being the victim. ââ¬Å"You love me. You love me, and thereââ¬â¢s nothing I can do but return your loveâ⬠.Parry declaring his love for Jed and trying to convince him that the love is equal. McEwan still though making Jed a strong willed, intelligent character not allowing him to retaliate. This as readers makes us like Jed more as we congratulate him on his will power not to just leave Parry and carry on with his life, but he humours him instead. The structure of this chapter is very simple as it is just a dialogue between Jed and Parry. But it does give us insight into Jedââ¬â¢s head as he is consciously analysing Parry (without saying it aloud).McEwan creates a lot of tension in this chapter as there are a lot of pauses between Jed saying something and Parry. They both have a lot of thinking time before they communicate with one another. ââ¬Å"I said nothing and waitedâ⬠ââ¬Å"When he spoke at lastâ⬠. Creating cliff-hangers and suspense as we are anxious as to what is to unfold. The conversation dips in and out as Jed ââ¬â being a scientist- is very aware of his surroundings so conversation dives in and out of scenery and dialogue. I think McEwan does this to show that Jed is partially aware of Parry but not fully paying attention so therefore has a clouded judgement.
Methods of Statistics Social Media
Question: Discuss about the Methods of Statistics Social Media. Answer: Introduction Usage of social media had changed over the years. People of every age group are into social media to connect with their friends, families and other people (DeAndrea et al., 2012). Youths who pursue education are also into social networking sites now days. It is found that there is increase in number of these youths of Australia in social media (Akyol Garrison, 2014). In this assignment, the effect of the social media on the education of the youths of Australia would be explored. The methods of collection of data for the research will be depicted in this assignment. Statistical tests will be used for the analysis of the collected data. Interpretation of the analysis would give an idea about the effect of social media on the education of the youths of Australia. Problem statement The problem statement of the research is to find the effect of social media on the education of the youths of Australia in the recent years. Research aim The aim of the research is to find the effect of social media on the education of the youths of Australia in the recent years. Research objective The objective of the research is as follows: To find the usage of social media among the students of Australia To find the education status of the students of Australia To find the effect of social media on the education of the students of Australia Research questions The questions of the research are as follows: How is the usage of social media among the students of Australia? What is the education status of the students of Australia? What is the effect of social media on the education of the students of Australia? Literature review Social media had become an important part of daily life. People of every age group are into social media. From students to professionals, businessman to old peoples, everybody is tech-freak. They prefer the virtual world over the real world due to advancement of technology and decrease in time. The students of Australia are no exception to this. They are also involved in social media from a very early age. According to the viewpoint of Akyol Garrison (2014), it was seen that the most popular social media website for the Australians is FaceBook. Instagram, Linkden and other social media websites are ranked behind Facebook. As per the viewpoints of Sponcil Gitimu (2013), it was seen that 24% of the teens go online almost constantly as they have the facilities of smart phones and other facilities to access internet. It was also seen that 92% of the teenagers go online every day as they have the facilities to access the social media. They invest ample of time on social media for various purpose. Social media increases the rate and quality of collaboration for students. It increases the communication skills of the students, which helps them to develop a better career. As per the viewpoint of Junco (2012), it was seen that spending more time on social media helps them to get accustomed with technology and develop more familiarity with the computers and other technologies. This helps them to learn the technologies and computers efficiently. Students customise their profiles in social media and update their details regularly. According to the viewpoint of Dabbagh Kitsantas (2012), it was seen that the customising the profiles help the students to have a better idea about the basic aspects of designs. These basic aspects are not taught in their school and they are useful to develop their resume and personal websites. However, there are various negative impacts of the use of social media by the students. Students who use social media while studying are seen not to develop the proper concepts of their subjects. They lose their ability to concentrate due to the distractions caused by the social networking sites (Sponcil Gitimu, 2013). As per the viewpoint of Cheston et al. (2013), it was seen that excessive use of social media affects the spelling and grammar of the students and the students fail to write a effective writing without the grammar spell check option. However, sharing of pictures and writing articles on the social networking sites help the students to increase their writing capability and broaden their creative aspects. It helps the students to develop their artistic abilities, provide confidence and help them to decide their career path. However, this does not provide a clear picture of the effect of social media on the marks and education of the students of Australia as a whole. Methodology Data collection Primary data would be collected for this survey. Questionnaire would be framed that would provide data for the research. Quantitative data and demographic data would be collected for the survey. The questions would be close-ended questions and some of the questions would be on Likerts scale. Thirty samples would be selected randomly from the students of Australia. Data would be collected for the age of the respondents, time spent on social media every day, purpose of using social media, amount of time invested in studies, marks obtained in last examination and the level of influence of social media on their education. Data analysis The methods of frequency, descriptive statistics, correlation and regression and the measures of central tendency would be used to analyse the data. These methods of statistics would give an idea about the effect of social media on the education of the students of Australia. Conclusion The research proposal gives an idea about the method of data collection to understand the influence of social media on the education of the students of Australia. It also provided the methods of statistics required to analyse the collected data. The analysis of the data would give the idea of effects of social media on the marks obtained by the students of Australia in their examination. It would also provide an idea about the progress of the students of Australia in their education. Recommendation It is recommended that the students must be guided properly to use the social media. They must be informed about the affects of social media on their education. Both the positive and the negative effects must be informed to them and they must be guided properly to use social media efficiently. This would help to have an efficient education system in Australia in near future. References Akyol, Z., Garrison, D. R. (2014).
